Trieu took us for a closer look at a local produce market. Despite the rain, the place was buzzing with activity. Deals were being done all around us for fresh fruit and vegetables, noodles, fish, sauces, pickles, meat and condiments. It seemed like no one even noticed our presence as we picked our way between the stalls, squeezing past the locals, who were usually quite intent on getting the best produce for the best price. The colours, the smells, the noise, the activity – these are all memorable aspects of a visit to a local market in Vietnam, something that should be included in every tourist’s itinerary.
